Mechanical joint damping to reduce action tremors.

Information for healthcare professionals regarding clinical evidence, patient selection criteria and prescription guidelines for the Stil Hand Control ™.

Action tremors

Action tremors (postural, kinetic or intention) occur during voluntary muscle activity, such as reaching for a glass or holding a posture. This type of tremor can occur in Essential Tremor, Parkinson’s disease, MS, dystonia and many other tremor disorders.

Essential tremor (ET) is the most common movement disorder, affecting roughly 5-6% of the adults of 65. Many ET patients remain undertreated due to medication side effects, poor tolerability, or reluctance to pursue surgical options.

Mechanical joint
damping

Untitled design (4)

The Stil Hand Control ™ is a specialized anti-tremor orthosis. Unlike a standard brace that simply locks a joint, the orthosis adds damping to the joints in the forearm. This mechanical joint damping suppresses fast motion, like tremors, while allowing slow voluntary movements.

Group 17190

Class I passive medical device – does not use any form of electrical stimulation and is battery-free. The orthosis can be worn over or under clothing and can be easily donned by individuals with shaking hands, thanks to its magnetic clips.

The orthosis is a passive system; it instantly reacts to movements and provides instant tremor reduction. Moreover, real-world clinical evidence indicates that the effectiveness of the orthosis remains stable over longer periods (>1 year).

Warning off streamline core

Mechanical joint damping can introduce minimal side effects (e.g., muscle fatigue, discomfort on hand). This can be considered minor compared to side effects or other tremor treatments (drowsiness, cognitive impairment, impotence).

Patient Selection Criteria

Clinical indications and exclusion criteria for the Stil Hand Control™

Indications & Efficacy

  • Primary Indication

    Essential Tremor.

  • Target Area

    Distal tremor (Wrist/Hand/Forearm).

  • Clinical Validation

Proven efficacy in stabilizing voluntary movements (eating, drinking) based on the Reinier de Graaf study.

Contra-indications & Safety

  • Contraindication (conditional)

Magnets can be removed. Unless magnets inside the Stil Hand Control™ are removed, the device cannot be used for patients with implantable devices that are sensitive to magnetic radiation (e.g., pacemakers).

  • Side effects

Use of the orthosis may cause muscle fatigue, muscle pain, skin irritation, redness of the skin or discomfort in the hand, elbow, or shoulder. Users with a history of shoulder conditions (e.g., frozen shoulder, rotator cuff injuries) may be more sensitive to shoulder discomfort.

  • Recommended time

2 hours at a time, and 5 hours per day.

Clinical evidence

Study design

In a randomised crossover trial involving 24 essential tremor patients, the Stil Hand Control™ was compared to an identical sham device without damping. Tremor severity was assessed using the TETRAS scale, a validated clinical rating scale for essential tremor (0 to 4 score across functional tasks). Tremor power was derived from accelerometery data.

Key results

The Stil Hand Control™ demonstrated a minimal clinically important difference (at least 1 TETRAS point reduction) for each of 7 functional tasks, and over 87% tremor power reduction on average.

What other HCPs say

“In essential tremor, particularly when tremor originates from wrist flexion–extension or forearm pronation–supination, the Stil Orthosis can significantly reduce hand tremor. For patients who remain functionally limited despite existing treatment options, such joint-damping orthoses may provide a valuable non-invasive treatment option.”
